Tucked in the northwest hills this home exudes the rich history of the hills on which it sits. A part of the Tualatin Range, the west hills hold an igneous foundation created by the convergence of the Juan de Fuca Plate and the North American Plate. On top of this foundation lays volcanic ash deposits which make up the silt of the west hills; providing rich soil for the abundance of foliage to take place. These factors, colliding as the plates did tens of millions of years ago, create the serene environment that is felt inside and outside of this home.

Authors Notes

Functionality - Functionally, this home holds many opportunities. The spacious layout makes way for some of the best gatherings to be had - or the opposite. To sit alone in this home is to sit alone in tranquility and privacy. The space is both endlessly open, and eternally-shielded. This dual functionality is one that is seldom possible to this degree - for that, this home is one to be cherished and revered.

Aesthetics - Aesthetically, a home of this quality and craftsmanship is undeniably superior. That’s the best way to describe it. There are three elements that ground this place in its superiority. Those three elements are Stone, Wood, and Glass. The stone being the igneous rock that makes up two of the main walls where real wood burning fireplace installations sit. The igneous rock grounds the home to its historic roots in the Tualatin hills formed of similarly composed stone. The exposed wooden beams, the framing which encompasses the windows, and all the natural wood trim center the focus and feeling in the home to nature and an indescribable ‘real’ feeling. Lastly, the large and numerous windows throughout the home let in the dappled sunlight, filtered through the lush forest surrounding the home. The Rock, Wood, and Glass allows one to experience the ethereal feel of this home without needing to think about what creates this feeling - it’s just there.

History: Historically, this home embodies the architectural innovation of the 1970’s, an era known for its embrace of split-level designs that harmonize with natural landscapes. The massive old-growth wooden beam inside not only highlights the craftsmanship of the period but also reflects the enduring presence of the ancient forests that have defined the Tualatin Hills for centuries. With abundant light streaming through its tall windows, the house captures the 70s emphasis on open, airy spaces, offering a tranquil retreat that echoes the historical and natural significance of its surroundings.
